Q: Why would someone want to have a dog breed DNA test done?

A. The #1 reason dog owners purchase our dog breed DNA test is to satisfy their own curiosity—To finally be able to answer the question when asked, “What kind of dog is that?” In addition, there are benefits to knowing your dog’s breed makeup, including a better insight into your dog’s behavior, nutritional and health needs.

Q: How many breeds does the test include?

A. The test detects 62 of AKC’s most popular breeds, which we believe includes 92-93% of the dog population in the United States.

Q: Do I need to take the dog to my vet to take the dog breed DNA test?

A. No, that’s not necessary. The technology used in this test allows for easy and painless DNA sample collection using the cheek swabs we provide in the sample collection kit. With the easy-to-follow instructions, anyone can collect their dog’s DNA at home.

Q: Are DNA test results using cheek swabs as accurate as tests that use blood?

A. Yes. DNA is contained in both cheek and blood cells. With today's advancements in technology, buccal (cheek) swabs are the preferred method for collecting DNA from skin cells inside the cheek. This is true for both canines and humans alike. There is no need to obtain blood to get an adequate sample of DNA.

Q: How long will it take to get my kit?

A. DNA sample collection kits are normally sent the SAME DAY they are ordered. If we receive your order after 3:00 PM EST, they will be sent the following day via USPS. Please allow 3-4 days for kits to arrive at your location. Kits can be sent next day courier delivery by special request for a fee of $25.

Q: How can I be sure that I collected the DNA properly?

A. The kit we will send you contains complete instructions for collecting your dog’s DNA safely and effectively. We provide 4 cheek swabs for each dog, which you will use to firmly swab the inside cheek. This collects more than enough DNA to run the test.

Q: How long will it take to get my results back?

A. Once we receive your samples back, the result will be completed and mailed within 3 weeks.

Q: What will the result look like?

A. The results include a DNA test certificate listing the breeds detected and the corresponding level they contribute towards your dog’s breed makeup. The result also includes a health and personality summary for each breed detected. Learn more on our DNA Test Features page.

Q: Can the test prove that my dog is purebred?

A. The test is really not designed to prove breed purity, nor should they be used in court to solve disputes over breed purity. Dogs resulting in a level 1 breed simply suggests that at least 75% of the dog background is from the breed listed; however, there is no definitive way to prove 100% breed purity. As a corollary, the DNA test results cannot be used to register a dog. Please check with the registry to determine their requirements for registering a dog.

Q: Can a DNA test be used to determine whether my dog is included in a group commonly known as pitbull or wolf-hybrid?

A. No. Please understand that results are not intended for identifying breeds deemed as “dangerous” and therefore should not be used to discriminate against any single breed.
